OUR COACHES CORNER
Ottawa Special Hockey Stars recognises that our players, our kids, have tremendous potential. In our view, a coach is a facilitator of learning. Our coaching staff emphasizes a player’s strengths and encourages him or her to build on their personal skills. In our model, individual players aim to improve their performance and focus on the ‘here and now’ rather than on the distant past, the future, or other players' abilities. Our approach is to help individuals improve their own performance: in other words, helping them to learn.

All coaches and volunteers are required to present a current background record check. They must be familiar with procedures and protocols for potential medical and safety situations. They are responsible for the safety and well-being of all players, while on the ice and in the facilities where SHS activities occur.

“Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential
to maximise their own performance.
It is helping them to learn
rather than teaching them.”
John Whitmore, in Coaching for Performance.
Our Head Coach has proven he has the right approach. For years, he has been volunteering in his community; the hockey and softball programs he organizes and contributes to are a source of pride for all : parents, coaches, volunteers and players!
His generosity and open-door policy allow all parents to reach out to him, and he has come to the support and aide of many families in difficult times.
When working with Coach Jeff, our kids flourish and make headway, not only in sports but in personal skills. This is what we, as parents, strive for - an environment where our kids feel safe, are accepted, acquire confidence, feel pride and take chances to better themselves.
